Alvina Sutherland

Root Down Cleansing began with a desire to care differently and a desire to reconnect with what had been forgotten.

I’m Alvina Sutherland: herbalist, grower, maker, hairdresser, mother, doula, and intuitive practitioner.

My work has grown from a deep relationship with plants and nature, a love of creating with my hands, and a lifelong curiosity about the ways we care for ourselves, one another, and the world around us.

Much of my path into herbalism began through motherhood. As I raised my daughters, I started questioning some of the things I had simply inherited, how we care for our bodies, where our remedies come from, and what knowledge may have been lost along the way. I began growing herbs, making remedies, learning traditional uses of plants, and creating botanical products for my family. What began in my own home eventually became Root Down.

Over time, that relationship with plants led me deeper into my own roots.

My family has a history connected to the land and to traditional ways of working with plants. Much of that knowledge was not passed down to me, but learning more about my ancestors and our family history has opened a deeper understanding of the connection between land, lineage, memory, and healing.

My ancestors are an important part of my spiritual practice and the work I do today. I spend time listening, learning, remembering, and exploring what it means to carry forward the wisdom of those who came before me. Reclaiming those connections and finding ways to share what I learn with the generations that come after me, is a meaningful part of why I do this work.

My work has always been rooted in care and transformation. As a hairdresser, I’ve spent years working through my hands, creating beauty, offering touch, and holding space for transformation. As a doula, I learned how powerful it can be to support someone through a major transition. Through my spiritual path, I’ve continued to deepen my relationship with intuition, tarot, energy work, and Andean shamanic traditions.

My practice continues to deepen through study, experience, and relationship with plants, with nature, with my ancestors, and with the traditions that have shaped my path.

Root Down is where these threads come together.

It is an herbal apothecary, a growing body of spiritual work, and a place to explore our relationship with nature, intuition, ancestry, and ourselves.

At the heart of it all is a desire to remember what has been forgotten, honor what has been carried before us, and create something meaningful to carry forward.
